The film tells the story of origin of Lucian, who was the first Lycan able to take human form. Viktor the king of the vampires, took him home after his lycan mother's death. As Lucian grows up at Viktor's home, his young daughter, Sonja, develops an attraction to the young Lycan, and Lucian becomes fond of Sonja as well.
Wild Lycans attack Sonja, disguised as a Death Dealer, when she is riding in the field. Lucian kills two Lycans just about to leap on the Dealer and kills one just as it enters the coven's walls.
Lucian asks Sonja if she would leave with him and she protests his leaving, but he is determined, and even shows her a key to his collar he made himself (the collar, due to its silver metal and deadly barbs, prevented him from transforming under Viktor's watch). Finally Sonja agrees to leave because she is anxiuos about the attitude of the vampires towards the Lycans, who are kept as slaves and inhibited to transfigurate into wolfes.
As human nobles come to meet with the vampire council for protection from the wild wolves in exchange for a tithe, Sonja goes out to guard them. Lucian hears the Lycans near Sonja and steals a horse and sword from a nearby Death Dealer.
The Lycans attack and kill the noble and Lucian fights them. When Lucian takes off his collar and changes into a Lycan, the wild Lycans back down to his howl and leave before he is shot down by Viktor's men. Viktor, feeling betrayed, locks Lucian away after whipping him 30 times with a three pronged chain-bladed whip.
When Lucian realizes that his and Sonja's relationship is not a secret any longer, he tries to convinces her to flee with him. Lucian escapes and kills the slave master and begins to free the other Lycans. The guards are alerted and the liberated Lycans begin to be slaughtered by the Death Dealers' ballista. A majority of the Lycans are trapped and Lucian is forced to leave without them. He and Raze begin finding "conscripts" for his "army" and even travels to the lair of the wild Lycans in order to forge an alliance between the two "rival" factions of wolf.
When Viktor discovers that Sonja has an illegal relationship with Lucian, he imprisons his daughter.
Lucian learns about Sonja's imprisonment and sets out rescue her. On their way out they are attacked by the Death Dealers. Viktor is also involved in the chase and when it comes to the fight, it is Sonja who is confronting Viktor.
When Sonja discloses to him, that she is pregnant with Lucian's child, Viktor attacks her with a knife to her throat and imprisons them again with newfound hatred. After being condemned for her crimes against the coven, Sonja is sentenced to death at a trial presided over by her father and the Council, and Lucian is awaiting her condemnation in chains. After Sonja's death Lucian attempts to escape.
Early in her career, Mitra took on any work she could find, including playing Tomb Raider's Lara Croft at trade shows. After four years of working in British theater, television and film, and especially following her lead role in the American-produced motion picture Beowulf (1999), (Rhona Mitra showed herself to the wider audiences playing the romantic interest of Christopher Lambert in Beowulf.) Mitra decided to try her luck in Los Angeles. Her first job after moving was a recurring guest role on the hit TV series Party of Five, followed by her challenging first American-shot film role-a girl who gets raped by an invisible man in Hollow Man (2000). - Rhona Mitra had a small role in the film Hollow Man, as a neighbor assaulted by Kevin Bacon's character.
On the big screen, she's appeared in Get Carter (2000) starring Sylvester Stallone, Sweet Home Alabama (2002) with Reese Witherspoon, starred opposite James Caviezel in Highwaymen (2003), played a supporting role opposite Jim Carrey in The Number 23 (2007). In 2008, Mitra starred in the lead role of the science fiction/action film Doomsday as Major Eden Sinclair and in 2009 went on to star in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans as Sonja, the daughter of the powerful vampire elder Viktor. She also appeared in three episodes of Stargate Universe. She stars in the 2010 Anders Anderson thriller film Stolen, alongside Josh Lucas, Jon Hamm and James Van Der Beek. She portrayed Claire Radcliff in the 2010 ABC supernatural series The Gates. She is set to star as Elsie Knocker in the upcoming movie Four Saints.
